West Bengal to intensify vigil in Maoist-hit areas
Tuesday, March 6, 2007
Kolkata, March. 6 (PTI): Two days after the killing of JMM MP Sunil Mahato by Maoists in neighbouring Jharkhand, the West Bengal is contemplating the shifting of Central forces from its southern part to the inter-state border.
This deployment will be in addition to the six companies of Central forces already positioned in districts affected by Maoist activities, Home Secretary P R Roy told reporters at the state secretariat, Writers' Buildings.
If necessary, the State Government will seek more Central forces from the Union Government to keep tabs on Maoist activities, he said.
The Maoist menace had neither increased nor decreased in West Bengal in the past two years, he said.
The strike called by the JMM in Jharkhand today to protest Mahato's killing had no impact in West Bengal but a general alert was in force in the state, Roy said
