V Sundaramoorthy, State Secretary of CPI (Maoists) contented that he along with four others Suresh, Kumaran, Karthick and Easwaran were arrested together by police.

While he was produced before the Special POTA court in Poonamalee, Karthick and Easwaran were produced before a court in Periyakulam, Sundaramoorthy contended.

Naxal threat in Tamil Nadu?

Naxal threat in Tamil Nadu?
Friday, July 13, 2007 07:50:33 am

/photo.cms?msid=2199603 The dreaded Red Corridor may just be pushing its boundaries. After intelligence reports that Naxals are trying to set up training camps in Tamil Nadu, police and the Special Task Force are undertaking massive combing operations to flush out the dreaded Naxalites.

Inside Naxal territory?

Police parties comb forests in Tamil Nadu
Police parties have been combing the forests between Theni and Madurai in Tamil Nadu, in a hunt for men who have virtually waged a war against the Indian state. Till now the infamous Red Corridor has covered areas spanning from Bihar to Andhra Pradesh - but now it seems Tamil Nadu has come within the red radar.

Over the last 10 days, as many as 6 Naxals including the top leader have been arrested and large caches of arms and ammunition seized.

Police sources say that though the Naxals don't pose such a serious threat yet, new Naxal camps are mushrooming in the area between Madurai and Theni because of the major crackdown against Naxals in bordering Andhra.

The state government is not taking any chances. In fact, ADGP K Vijayakumar, who managed to track down and nab the dreaded sandalwood smuggler Veerappan, has been now been called in.

"The search is still on and we have spread our forces. We have also taken assistance from other states," he says.

After 2002, this is the first time that the police have busted a Naxal group in Tamil Nadu. Police sources say that the priority now is to ensure that not even a single Naxalite is left free in the jungle and the combing operations will continue till then.

Dragnet for Naxal’s wife

Dragnet for Naxal's wife
Thursday July 12 2007 08:52 IST

SALEM: Following the arrest of Naxal kingpin Sundaramurthy in Tirupur on Monday, the 'Q' branch police have intensified their search throughout Salem and surrounding regions like Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri to trace the whereabouts of Sundaramurthy's wife Chandra, who is absconding since the crackdown on Naxals at Uthangarai in Krishnagiri in 2002.

Chandra, a native of Ramamurthy Nagar at Theevattypatty near Omalur in Salem, is said to be one of the prominent figures in the women's Naxal wing.

According to sources in the 'Q' branch, Chandra was also a key person in the 2002 Uthangarai training camp. However, she, along with a few others, had gone into hiding since then.

Manivasagam, another Naxal nabbed during the Uthangarai training, is Chandra's brother. He is at present living in Theevattypatty after obtaining bail in the Uthangarai case, sources said and added that with only a standard six education, Chandra fell for Sundaramurthy's daring attitude when the two were performing the duty of expanding the Maoist ideological base in the State.

The couple were united in wedlock in 1995. Chandra quarrelled with a head constable Kalaiarasi (now an inspector) in Salem in 1996, when the latter prevented her from pasting controversial posters in public places. She even cut herself using a blade when the police tried to arrest her.

According to sources, Chandra was an active member of the ''Tamilnadu Penn Urimai Kazhagam,'' later renamed as ''Puratchigara Pengal Iyakkam,'' after the outfit established nexus with Maoist outfits in Tamil Nadu and elsewhere in the nineties.

Chandra suffered from tuberculosis years ago and recovered later. A close relative of her is residing in Salem city.

Meanwhile, 'Q' branch sources said that more information would be obtained after taking the three Naxals into police custody. On the address provided by Karthik - one of the three Naxals arrested recently, sources maintained that though strong evidence was not available so far, investigation was on.

Instructions were given from Chennai to intensify vigil and nab Chandra and the other Naxals.

Suspected intrusion of Maoists

T’PURAM: The State police are on high alert against the suspected intrusion of some Maoist activists into the state.

Tamil Nadu Intelligence authorities have raised suspicions that some Maoist activists had intruded to Kerala following the busting of a training camp in Murugamalai near Periyakulam in Theni district a few days back.

„We are on high alert in wake of the statement of the Tamil Nadu Intelligence authorities in this regard. However, nobody could be identified or held. We have also not received any official communications from Tamil Nadu, „ ADGP Intelligence Jacob Punnose said.

Sources said that police were verifying suspected persons in view of the alert. It may be recalled that there were reports that a Maoist leader who was killed in an encounter with the Andra Pradesh police recently was held form Kollam KSRTC bus station on June 22.

Jobless youth targeted
Thursday July 12 2007 08:49 IST

COIMBATORE: In what could be seen as a significant development, the Maoist outfits seem to be targeting unemployed youth in urban areas for recruitment of cadre, according to State Intelligence officials.

The arrest of most-wanted Maoist V Sundaramurthy and his associates in Tirupur had shifted the focus of the police on this hosiery town and the neighbouring Coimbatore, both places identified as ‘‘safehouse’’ centres for these Naxalites.

In fact, even a few weeks ago, Intelligence officials in Coimbatore had said that they were worried about the possibility of Maoist extremist activities than that of Islamic fundamentalists.

‘‘From the documents and pamphlets recovered during the arrest of Sundaramurthy, it is evident that the Maoists are using ideological propaganda to target unemployed youth in the cities. This had come to light during the interrogation of some of them arrested at the Murugamalai camp, who spouted propagandist statements like ‘exploitation by zamindars and agricultural workers getting less than Rs 20 as wages’. They clearly exhibited a lack of knowledge of the rural realities,’’ an intelligence official said in Chennai.

Meanwhile, officials said that Sundaramurthy’s arrest and the resultant hunt for others who escaped from Murugamalai created a major setback to the Maoists, bringing their activities to a halt at least for a while.

K.T. Sangameswaran

Searches are also on in Tiruvallur and Vellore districts

Navin Prasad absconding for past five years

Multi-pronged strategy to tackle naxalite menace

CHENNAI: It has been decided to double the strength of police personnel involved in combing operations against naxalites in various parts of the State, according to a police source.

Besides the hill ranges of Periyakulam, Kodaikanal and Western Ghats, the searches are on in Tiruvallur and Vellore districts. As of now, a little over 200 Special Task Force personnel of all ranks are engaged in the combing.

One of the three identified CPI (Maoist) cadres, who escaped from Murugan Malai near Periyakulam a few days ago, is wanted by the police in connection with the Uthangarai encounter in 2002. The source said Navin Prasad of Dharmapuri district was absconding for the past five years.

The others were identified as Kalidas from Paramakudi, against whom several cases were pending, and Ranjith of Tiruvallur district, who was absconding for the past four years. The police are continuing their hunt for seven more persons

Thanks to the timely information from the local people, the police were able to nab three naxalites from Murugan Malai. Rewarding the public in a suitable manner was under consideration, the source said.

One of the .303 rifles seized by the police had a specific mark in white paint. Following this, a police team had been rushed to Karnataka for verification.

The arms and ammunition were all country-made. The grenades did not contain any charge.

Director-General of Police D. Mukherjee told The Hindu that a multi-pronged strategy to tackle the naxalite menace was under implementation, particularly after the Uthangarai encounter. A constant effort was on to involve the impres sionable group in constructive activity. The police were organising sports activities and assisted the youth in the development of their skills. Mobile libraries had been started. The personnel of the special division visited the violence-prone villages and the absence of basic amenities there. The Superintendents of Police concerned were submitting reports regularly to the Collectors

Oust Reliance !

Link V Naxal Revolution

Comrade Arasubalraj took part in a massive rally against Reliance Fresh in Chennai,
on 1st of May he posts the following report on his blog.

The meaning of May Day is rubbished in India primarily by the pseudo-communist parties CPI and CPI (M) and by the ruling class parties like Congress, BJP etc., Historically May Day came in to existence to commemorate the Haymarket Martyrs of 1886 who fought for the Eight-Hour work day. The remaining eight-hours other than work and sleep for which the workers fought is not for entertainment as interpreted today. It is for organising the working class to build their future. Hence May Day cannot be celebrated as yet another holiday to rest at home or to distribute sweets as a ceremony to apoliticise and castrate the working class.

With this understanding, People's and Literary Association (PALA) and its associate organisations namely New Democratic Labour Front (NDLF), Peasants Liberation Front (PLF) and Revolutionary Students Youth Front (RSYF) in Tamilnadu set specific political agenda for every May Day to organise the working class to make conscious of its duty. Hence, for the past two decades, May Day in Tamilnadu is marked with arousing protests, agitations and conferences by PALA. This year, as announced earlier, as part of the one month campaign against Reliance and MNC's entering in Retail sector, PALA organised the protests encircling Reliance Fresh Shops. The one month campaign had 1,50,000 pamphlets, thousands of posters and wall writings and 25,000 booklets covering all over Tamilnadu but the primary focus was on Chennai as at present Reliance has started shops only in Chennai. The intensive campaign involved the doorstep propaganda in and around areas of Reliance shops.

The arousing march was flagged off by Comrade.Mukundan, President of NDLF and it started from the Koyambedu Market which is at the verge of extinction due to the Reliance entry in Chennai. The fervent slogans raised by the comrades of these organisations exposed the political parties, bureaucracy and Reliance while upholding the Naxalbari Revolutionaries as the only alternative to face the Recolonisation onslaught. The Revolutionary songs of PALA arts troupe roared in the air. Children and women carried the placards defying the scorching heat. The march reached the Reliance Fresh shop at Virugambakkam Market Road one in sense and two thousand in numbers.

The shop was closed expecting the protest and the police were all ready with barricades. Comrade Marudhaiyan, Secretary of PALA and Comrade Kaliappan, Joint-Secretary of PALA gave speeches explaining the movement. As the one-month campaign in various forms already reached the people of that area, they came in large numbers to watch the agitation bearing the three-hour traffic jam. The comrades got arrested 50 yards before the shop. When they all were carried in Police vans, Koyambedu trader's union designators came to wish the comrades. Comrade.Marudhiyan thanked them and said, "The distance between us and the shop is just 50 yards. But the distance between the understandings of the people on the menace of MNC's in retail sector and the reality is far more. Our motto at present of this struggle is to reduce that gap. If reliance to be put down, then Koyambedu should rise up!"

The false and confused ideas ruling the minds of people that deter them to foray were not formed by Ambani. These ideas were thrust in by the ruling class, media and political parties with the implementation of Recolonisation from the last decade. When the traders alone raise the slogan to oust the MNC's, Reliance masquerades in 'quality and cheaper prices' and lures the people. But when the fight begins as a fight against Recolonisation then the slogan will become a people's slogan and the definite moment will arrive.

The recent, spontaneous, laudable struggle of Ranchi vendors shows the desperation of the small vendor class. The land of Birsa Munda atlast showed the way to the country. These struggles should be organised and shouldn't be allowed to be corrupted with decomposed political parties. People's movements should be channelised as movements against Recolonisation as a whole and not to fade away as scattered and spontaneous.

R Udayagiri operation accused released on bail

PARALAKHEMUNDI, April 5: Twenty two persons, including two teenage girls who had been arrested by Gajapati police on charges of being involved in the R Udayagiri carnage perpetrated by Naxalites on 24 March 2006, have been released on bail by the additional district judge, Paralakhemundi, yesterday.

In a setback to police investigations, all the 22 accused were released on bail as the prosecution failed to convince the court of the grounds to reject their appeal for bail and to provide adequate evidence in support of the accusation of arson which allegedly resulted in the death of two OSAP constables. Police failed to prove the charges brought against the accused of kidnapping the OIC of R Udayagiri PS and the superintendent of the R Udayagiri Sub Jail.

The SP of Gajapati, Mr AK Sinha, was not available for comments on the development. According to defence advocate Mr Upendra Nayak police had arrested the accused on the basis of their conjectures inspired by the film Lal Salam with the famous actress Nandita Das acting in the lead role. In fact Nandita Das had decried the arrests which she thought were based on the viewing of the film. "It is interesting that police have failed to present the two officers who had been kidnapped as their witnesses for once during the course of the trial," stated Mr Upendra Nayak. The accused were released with a surety of around Rs 20,000. As in the defence advocate's argument the name of Nandita Das cropped up several times, the judge asked if the defence could produce the actress as a witness.

All the accused were confined to the Berhampur Circle Jail for security reasons and will be released on Tuesday. The bail plea had been filed in the matter of 174/06 of JMFC R Udayagiri in Narendra Dengamaka, Muluka Majhi, Prasanta Kadraka and Manoj Majhi Vs State of Orissa and GR66/06 which had Ulesh Rika and 11 others Vs State of Orissa and 67,68,69,70,71,181 and 182/06 with the same accused Vs State of Orissa. The girls were accused in the case 174/06 Vs State of Orissa and an old man, Dukha Majhi, was arrested under 175/06 for seeing the said movie but was released as police failed to file the charge sheet.
