Naxal problem: Govt. to pursue its multi-pronged strategy

New Delhi, March 5 (PTI): Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal Jharkhand today left for Ranchi to assess the situation arising out of the brutal killing of a JMM MP by naxals.

The Centre is keeping a close watch on the situation and the Ministry of Home Affairs has a sought a report from Jharkhand Chief Secretary and Director General of Police on the last night killing of Sunil Mahato, the MP from Jamshedpur.

"The government will continue to pursue its multi-pronged strategy to fight the naxals," a Home Ministry official said.

The Centre is in constant touch with the Jharkhand government and has assured it all assistance to deal with the situation.

The incident has drawn strong condemnation from President A P J Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil.

Mahato, the general secretary of the JMM, two of his bodyguards and a party colleague were shot dead by naxals at Bakuria town, where the MP was invited as a chief guest for a football match. The Hindu
