Sandeep Phukan Saturday, March 10, 2007 (New Delhi): A meeting of Naxal rebels last month decided to wage a war against the Special Economic Zon es or SEZ and other development projects in India, NDTV has found. Many people opposed to the SEZ see it as a modern version of the old zamindari system. In February over 100 Naxal and Maoist leaders from 16 states met for their ninth unity congress in the forests bordering Jharkhand and Orissa. Minutes of this meeting available with NDTV show that Maoists have decided to launch violent attacks on SEZ and projects that displace people. New Strategy They plan to arm locals where SEZs are proposed. They also plan to transform their current guerilla units into mobile units which will strike in various parts of the country and then disappear. These units will also look for new recruits among debt-ridden farmers in Maharashtra and Punjab. Home Ministry sources say they are aware of the Maoists' new strategy. "Andhra Pradesh is fighting the naxal problems quite well with the Grey Hound," Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal said. So far, the UPA government has been talking about better rehabilitation to all those who are losing their land to development projects. Now with new threats emerging, a whole new dimension has been added. NDTV |
