State Chief Secretaries meet over internal security

New Delhi, April 20: Internal security, with special focus on Naxal violence, will be top on the agenda of a meeting of state Chief Secretaries convened here on Friday by Cabinet Secretary B K Chaturvedi.

With Naxalism posing the biggest threat to internal security, the high-level meeting is likely to discuss ways to deal with emerging situation in the backdrop of some recent incidents.

Intelligence inputs have hinted at the vulnerability of the stock market, sea routes and the uninhabited islands which could be used as a safe haven by terrorists.

Sources in the MHA said the meeting would be attended by Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta, Special Secretary (Internal Security) M L Kumawat and other senior officials dealing with internal security and Naxal management.

Though billed as an administrative reform event, the meeting is expected to be much more than those held annually to take stock of the internal security situation.

This is because of new threats from sea routes, terror funding, terrorists` interest in stock markets, pumping of fake currency by terrorist outfits and fresh attacks by ultras.

The MHA has also convened a meeting of the coordination centre on Naxalism here on April 26 after completing its exercise of reviewing operational strategies to tackle Naxalite activities in nine states and deliberating on development aspects.

The coordination centre, comprising Chief Secretaries and Police Chiefs of nine states hit by Maoist violence, is expected to discuss changes in operating procedures of paramilitary forces and state police.
