WARANGAL: Top Maoist leader Merugu Sambaiah alias Naganna alias Suranna surrendered before the police here on Sunday. According to sources, Sambaiah approached the police after walking through the forest, expressing his willingness to give up the armed struggle.
He left the party a week ago and trekked towards the district. Sambaiah was working as the Maoist party West Bastar division committee secretary and was a member of the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC). Aged around 52 years, he belongs to Nallabelli village in Sangem mandal of Warangal district and went underground in 1989-90 and always worked outside the district.
He carries a reward of Rs. 2 lakhs on his head. Sambaiah appeared to have given up owing to the age factor and increased repression in Bastar area.
Special Correspondent writes from Hyderabad: Senior police officials here confirmed the surrender of Sambaiah.
They, however, denied that he was shifted to Hyderabad for questioning. The Hindu
