Violence erupts again in Nandigram, one killed, 25 injured

Kolkata, July 29: One person was killed and eight others injured as fresh clashes erupted between members of the Trinamool Congress-backed Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee (BUPC) and CPI(M) cadre in Nandigram today.

CPI(M) supporter Bapan Patra, who received bullet injuries, died in the evening. Two others, reportedly BUPC members, are said to be in a serious condition.

The BUPC has called for a 24-hour bandh in Nandigram tomorrow.
FRESH TROUBLE: The RAF was deployed in the troubled area, which has witnessed clashes since January.

The RAF was deployed in the troubled
area, which has witnessed clashes since January.

BUPC members ransacked CPI(M) Zonal Committee office. Police had to resort to a lathicharge to control the mob. The clash started at around 11 am, when BUPC members took out a rally to celebrate the anti-CPI(M) mahajot's victory in seven wards of the Haldia Municipality. The BUPC rally followed a CPI(M) rally, celebrating Left Front's win in Haldia.

East Midnapore District Police Superintendent Anil Srinivasan said, "Both parties took out rallies in Nandigram today morning. During the rallies, there were some problems and a clash erupted, in which, guns were used and bombs hurled. Later, the mob tried to ransack the CPI(M) party office. Some of our men also received minor injures. We are deploying forces in Nandigram and the bordering areas to maintain peace."

According to police, on Sunday, CPI(M) first took out a victory rally in a Nandigram market. This was followed by a rally by BUPC members in the same market. While the BUPC rally was passing a bus stand, crude bombs were thrown on the supporters. This sparked tension and BUPC supporters attacked CPI(M) Zonal Committee office. At the time of the attack, local CPI(M) leaders and supporters were present at the office.

Meanwhile, a huge contingent of police personnel arrived at the spot and resorted to lathicharge to control the situation. CPI(M) leaders and cadres, including Zonal Committee member Ashok Bera, fled the spot.

Bera said, "They were trying to set fire to the party office. A number of our supporters were beaten up. I managed to save my life by escaping."

BUPC supporters, led by Abu Sufiyan and Abu Taher, then gheraoed Nandigram Police Station for an hour protesting police brutality. As the news of the clash spread, firings were also exchanged between BUPC members and CPI(M) cadre in Bhangabera and Tekhali, bordering Nandigram and Khejuri. The opposing factions hurled crude bombs at each other. Shops in Nandigram market downed shutters and the area took a deserted look with BUPC members and police patrolling various areas. The villagers and BUPC members also dug up many roads.

Sisir Adhikary, Trinamool MLA from Egra, said, "The CPI(M) has planned the attack with the help of the police. We were having a peaceful victory rally when they hurled crude bombs. Later, near their party office, police mercilessly lathi-charged us. Over 30 of our supporters are have been injured."

CPI(M) Zonal Committee member Ashok Guria said, "The Trinamool is trying to disrupt the peace process. They attacked our party office without any provocation and tried to kill our supporters."
