Naxals Kill Railway Security Jawan

Patna: June 19, 2007

Suspected Maoist guerillas on the Sonepur-Chhapra division of the East-Central Railway on Tuesday night shot and killed two Government Railway Police on 3020 Down Kathgodam-Bagh Express and got away with three police rifles, a carbine, and some other weapons.

Officials in Sonepur, however, confirmed only one death and two injuries. Before leaving, the Naxalites also took one of the jawans with them, it was learnt.

No civilian injury was reported in the assault.

The injured jawans who were identified as Mangal Sharma and Ram Pravesh Rai, were taken to the Sonepur railway hospital but were then referred to Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) because of the seriousness of their injuries.

As reported, heavily armed ultras entered the train between Goldenganj and Badagopal station. When the train reached near Avatar Nagar, the criminals pulled their weapons and opened indiscriminate firing at a railway escort team. As the bullets pierced the body of Ajit Paswan, a member of the escort team, the criminals then stabbed him multiple times with a large machete to ensure he was dead.

The jawan who was forcibly taken away by the extremists was identified as Umesh Singh, the police said.

Senior railway police officials including railway DIG Raghunath Prasad Singh visited the crime scene to take stock of the situation.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav condemned the incident and directed senior officials to launch a manhunt to catch the killers.
