Sangrur, June 12
A large number of farmers led by the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Dakonda) gheraoed the Deputy Commissioner's office after no officer visited their dharna site to receive a memorandum from them, here today.
They lifted the gherao only when Sangrur ADC Indu Malhotra received the memorandum from the agitating farmers.
Earlier, hundreds of farmers staged a protest dharna against the proposed acquisition of 1,300 acres of farmland in two Sangrur district villages, Bibbar and Majhi, by the government for setting up a thermal power plant on Bhawanigarh-Nabha road, near Nabha. The protest, which continued for about four hours, was held outside the district administrative complex
