Raipur, May 12: A group of Naxalites in school uniform shot dead an armed police constable in Bastar district of Chhattisgarh on Saturday, a top police officer said. Sukhchand, who was moving in the weekly market at Mardapa, was fired upon from a close range by the Naxalites who were in school uniform, Bastar district Superintendent of Police Gurjinder Pal Singh told agencies by phone. After the incident, which took place about 415 km from here, the Naxalites, numbering two to three, took away the ak-47 rifle the constable was carrying, he said. To a question, the SP said child Naxals may be behind the incident. An old woman was also injured in the firing by the Naxals who used a 9mm pistol. Around ten other constables who were nearby chased the ultras who however gave the police a slip, he said. The Naxalites left behind a bag containing three hand grenades, two knives and several rounds of ammunition, Singh said. Bureau Report |
