VIJAYAWADA: Intelligence reports that the Nuzvid region of Krishna district could be used as a shelter zone by the CPI-Maoists is causing disquiet in the area.
Nuzvid area, known for its large stretches of mango orchards, upland terrain and adjoining hills, offers an excellent cover for the Naxals. Proximity to Khammam forests, road connectivity with Hanuman Junction, Eluru, Mylavaram and other areas make it a safe zone.
A few years ago, CPI-ML People's War dalam member Shankar had constructed a house in in the town to use it as a shelter for the Naxals in transit. The Naxal was later killed in an encounter.
The sudden inspection of various police stations in Nuzvid area a few days ago by Eluru Range DIG Ahsan Raza is being seen as a significant development.
During his visit, the DIG indicated that the Naxals, who were already facing tough times in Andhra-Orissa and Andhra-Chhattisgarh borders and in the Nallamala region, could use Nuzvid as a shelter zone. He also said that there were reports of extortion by some Maoists, but the affected parties were not coming forward to lodge complaints.
Immediately after the DIG's visit, five armed Naxals reportedly went to a chicken feed company executive and demanded Rs 5 lakh from him.
The persons brandished revolvers and threatened to kidnap the executive's children. Similarly, some Naxalites went to a business house in Devaragunta area to collect party fund. All these incidents are causing disquiet among the locals.
Meanwhile, there are disturbing reports from Chintur in Khammam district that the Maoists were trying to recruit youths into their ranks. Newindpress
